We started our business back in 2009, with a little push from family and friends. I carried my first serious camera everywhere, one that I’d bought before our own honeymoon back in 2006. Back then I was happy capturing photos of life in general, but I knew I had the ability to see things slightly differently, with a dramatic type of composition. Family and friends saw this and encouraged me to take my passion further.
This was basically the foundation of my own style. But I wasn’t anywhere near where I wanted to be. Yes, I loved the dramatic scenes, the moody skies, and the ambience in a beautifully lit room, but from a techincal viewpoint, I was not there. So off I went on various training courses, growing my skillset and my love for manipulating light. I even spent time down in The Cotswolds learning from fellow pros, teaching me the use of something I take with me to every wedding, and that is off camera flash.
It’s that skill, and my drive to master that skill, which sets some of our photography apart. I’m still learning now. Never afraid to push myself and boundaries to new levels.
Rebecca didn’t become part of the business until I’d covered a few weddings. During the early stages she just gave me the supportive backbone to get the business off the ground. But she soon became an absolute necessity, for us to become our creative best.
She is now an integral part of ‘Team SKL Photography’. Whilst she stands with me at every wedding we cover, helping me with more complex lighting situations/ideas, she’s now developed her own unique style as well.
It’s the combination of my dramatics and her love of candid, off the cuff photography which wins over our clients, week in, week out. Rebecca is a very laid back, almost a ‘behind the scenes’ photographer. She’s learnt the technical side to the photo taking from me, but her style is very much her own. Some of the most loved wedding photos are hers. That is testament to how she approaches the day itself. Her work is very much done in natural light too. It’s rare she ever uses flash, for anything.
So that is us in a nutshell. Two very differing styles, two completely different approaches on how we photograph the day. SKL Photography – Creative, dramatic, posed and candid wedding photographers from Leeds in West Yorkshire.
